Harris Home — How to Help
How to Help

Every way to keep the door open.

For seventy-two years, this home has stayed open because people keep showing up — with dollars, with hours, with things. Here's every door you can walk through.

Give

Dollars that keep the lights on.

Monthly partners keep the doors open year-round. One-time gifts fund specific kits and capital needs. Both matter. Both stay here.

Most Requested

Become a monthly partner.

Steady, predictable support is what keeps a 24/7 licensed crisis program actually running. Pick an amount. Pick a day. That's it.

What monthly support covers
  • $25/month — a week of groceries for one child in need
  • $50/month — one counseling session for one child, every month
  • $100/month — a month of utilities for one set of dorms in a wing
  • $250/month — two weeks of BOOST! tutoring for one student
One-Time Gifts

Fund a kit.

When a kid arrives in crisis at 2am, they don't arrive with a suitcase. These kits cover what they walk in without.

  • New Arrival
    Welcome Kit
    $ 75

    Towels, linens, toiletries, pajamas, and a first-night bag. What every new resident gets in their hands before lights-out.

    Fund a kit →
  • August
    Back-to-School Kit
    $ 40

    Folders, paper, pens, pencils, calculator, backpack. One kid, one year, ready on day one.

    Fund a kit →
  • November – February
    Cold Weather Kit
    $ 120

    Winter coat, boots, gloves, thermal layers. Huntsville gets cold; most kids arrive with neither closet nor coat.

    Fund a kit →
  • Capital Need
    Gym Fund
    $ Any

    Weights, stall mats, dumbbells, and a safe place to burn off what trauma leaves in the body. Every dollar moves this closer.

In-Kind Donations

Got things to give instead of dollars?

New or gently used clothing, toiletries, school supplies, and household goods are welcome. Call ahead so we can make sure someone is there to receive it — and to let you know what's most needed that week.

Show Up

The thing no check can buy.

Kids in crisis need more than shelter. They need people who keep showing up — week after week, on the same day, with the same face.

  • Volunteer
    Give hours that turn into trust.

    Event support, facility projects, meal service, seasonal drives, and one-on-one time with residents. We'll find the fit that matches what you've got to give.

  • Tutor
    BOOST! is looking for you.

    Four afternoons a week, 4:30–6:00pm, we sit with middle and high schoolers through homework, ACT prep, and college applications. Alabama A&M and UAH partners welcome; so are you.

  • Mentor
    Be the adult who keeps calling.

    A steady relationship with one caring adult changes the long-term arc. Mentors commit to a year, meet twice a month, and show up on the Saturdays they said they would.

Spread the Word

The kids you haven't met yet are counting on the people you do know.

Most Harris Home supporters found us through someone they trusted. You can be that someone. Share the link, tag us, or send one of these to a friend.

Still deciding?

The door is always the point.

Pick the way that fits your life right now. Any of them — all of them — help keep it open.
